Get ready for lift off as the 2014 International Space Apps Challenge comes to Nigeria

The International Space Apps Challenge is a 48-hour global space exploration focused mass collaboration event that has a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on Earth and in Space.

For the first time in 3 years, Lagos (and Calabar) will be one of the 95 participating cities and The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Abuja will also be providing thought leadership and technical know-how to guide teams as they attempt to create solutions using openly available data supplied through NASA missions and technology.

The 2014 Challenge covers 5 keys areas; Robotics, Space Technology, Human Space Flights, Earth Watch and Asteroid – with participation welcome from not just developers, but also artists, graphic designers, students, teachers and enthusiasts who are passionate about solving earth and space issues. To make the event relevant to the Nigerian technological ecosystem, intending participants using the Alpha 5 Development Platform would be able to choose from local issues covering:

 

• Agricultural and environmental/weather information platforms for farmers
• Mobile apps that can empower the 100 million (and counting) mobile users in Nigeria, in innovative ways
• Teaching robotics and space engineering to Nigerian kids
• Getting better information about space innovation down to the grassroots and schools
• Other challenges that will be created around partner technologies

Additionally, prizes will also be offered for the best apps built on the Alpha 5 platform, for the following challenges:

• LEGO Education: Take part in ESA Space Robotics Challenges
• Microsoft Nigeria: Build space app or game for the Windows Phone operating system
• Alpha Software: Build web or mobile database app platform and integrate any APIs
• TomTom South Africa: Build great app that uses comprehensive map API
• Samsung Nigeria: Build new Africa-focused space app for the Android Phone operating system
